چکیده

Glossary andesite magma or volcanic rock is characterised by intermediate SiO2 concentration. Andesite magmas have rheological properties that are intermediate between basalt and rhyolite magmas. Silica content in andesites ranges from approximately 52 to 66 weight percent. Common minerals in andesite include plagioclase, amphibole and pyroxene. Andesite is typically erupted at temperatures between 800 to 1000 ◦C Andesite is particularly common in subduction zones, where tectonic plates converge and water is introduced into the mantle.

Alba Patera, Mars: Topography, structure, and evolution of a unique late Hesperian–early Amazonian shield volcano

[1] New spacecraft data, especially MOLA topography, reveal important characteristics of Alba Patera that were either unknown or poorly resolved in previous data sets. The major and consistent breaks of slope and the specific pattern of lava flows within a broad region around Alba Patera permit division of this area into two major parts that appear to be related to different episodes of volcani...

Muon radiography and deformation analysis of the lava dome formed by the 1944 eruption of Usu, Hokkaido —Contact between high-energy physics and volcano physics—

Lava domes are one of the conspicuous topographic features on volcanoes. The subsurface structure of the lava dome is important to discuss its formation mechanism. In the 1944 eruption of Volcano Usu, Hokkaido, a new lava dome was formed at its eastern foot. After the completion of the lava dome, various geophysical methods were applied to the dome to study its subsurface structure, but resulte...

Structure and dynamics of surface uplift induced by incremental sill emplacement

Shallow-level sill emplacement can uplift Earth’s surface via forced folding, providing insight into the location and size of potential volcanic eruptions. Linking the structure and dynamics of ground deformation to sill intrusion is thus critical in volcanic hazard assessment. This is challenging, however, because (1) active intrusions cannot be directly observed, meaning that we rely on trans...

Periodic behavior in lava dome eruptions

Lava dome eruptions commonly display fairly regular alternations between periods of high activity and periods of low or no activity. The time scale for these alternations is typically months to several years. Here we develop a generic model of magma discharge through a conduit from an open-system magma chamber with continuous replenishment. The model takes account of the principal controls on f...

Some first order observations on magma transfer from mantle wedge to upper crust at volcanic arcs

The viscosity of lavas erupted at volcanic arcs varies over orders of magnitude. A comparison of the relative abundance of viscous lava dome eruptions indicates that the average viscosity of arc lavas also varies considerably between arcs. It is shown that for continental or transitional arcs with little within-arc crustal deformation and without underlying slab windows or tears, average lava v...
